Overview
Apache APISIX is a cloud-native API gateway built on NGINX and etcd that dynamically controls routing, load balancing, authentication, rate limiting, canary releases, and observability. Its plugin architecture also extends into AI gateway and MCP use cases.

Operate etcd as part of the control plane
Even the quickstart launches APISIX together with etcd. Production architecture should include etcd durability, backups, network security, and Admin API protection.

Version 3.19.0 also documents AI-provider proxying, LLM fallback and load balancing, token-based rate limiting, and mcp-bridge. The quickstart script is downloaded from an external URL, so production deployments should choose a version-pinned official deployment method.

Run the APISIX quickstart
Start APISIX together with etcd. Because the script is fetched remotely, use a version-pinned official deployment method for production.

Verify the gateway response
Confirm the APISIX HTTP endpoint is responding. Keep the Admin API on port 9180 protected from public access.
