AppFlowy — an open-source Notion alternative that lets you choose how docs, databases, sync, and AI are hosted

Overview

AppFlowy is an open-source Notion alternative built with Flutter and Rust that brings documents, tasks, databases, published sites, and AI into one workspace. Database data can be viewed as grids, boards, or calendars, while desktop and mobile clients cover macOS, Windows, Linux, iPhone, and Android. Its differentiator is not merely recreating a Notion-style interface: users can choose AppFlowy Cloud, a self-hosted AppFlowy Cloud server, or local-oriented workflows, and the application also includes an Ollama-backed Local AI path so the operator has more control over where data is processed and synchronized.

Features and best fit

Based on official documentation; not hands-on tested · Content checked:

Keep documents and structured data together with Grid, Board, and Calendar

AppFlowy supports page-style documents alongside databases that can be presented as Grid, Board, and Calendar views. A project can therefore use a Kanban board for tasks, a calendar for dates and deadlines, and a grid for dense structured data without moving to a separate application. The README highlights Tasks, Databases, Sites, and Templates as major surfaces, allowing notes, project tracking, and publishable documentation to live in the same workspace.

Combine workspace AI search with an Ollama-backed Local AI path

Recent AppFlowy releases include Workspace AI Search, which can find pages through titles, keywords, or natural-language questions, along with AI Overviews that return generated summaries with source links. The Local AI implementation separately stores an Ollama server URL, chat model, and embedding model, providing a path for local model execution. This gives AppFlowy both cloud-oriented AI capabilities and a local AI option rather than forcing every AI workflow through one external provider.

For teams wanting a Notion-like workspace with control over sync, AI, and data

AppFlowy fits personal knowledge management and team documentation or project-database use cases where data ownership matters as much as the editing experience. Desktop and mobile applications make it more suitable for cross-device and collaborative use than a desktop-only local notebook. The client also exposes configuration for AppFlowy Cloud and self-hosted servers, allowing organizations to place the synchronization backend under their own operational control.

Local use, collaboration, and AI have different privacy boundaries

AppFlowy supports local-oriented use, managed AppFlowy Cloud, and self-hosted AppFlowy Cloud configurations, so not every capability is inherently device-only. Organizations that want their own multi-device synchronization and collaboration stack need the server-side self-hosted deployment in addition to the client. AI also spans Local AI and cloud-backed functionality, so the effective data path depends on the model and server configuration selected by the operator.

The AppFlowy client is distributed under AGPLv3, which can impose source-availability obligations when modified versions are offered over a network. AppFlowy also explicitly states that it does not currently claim to outperform Notion in functionality or design. Teams migrating an established Notion workspace should therefore verify the specific database behavior, integrations, publishing workflows, and collaboration features they depend on rather than assuming complete feature parity.
