Overview
Arduino IDE 1.x is a desktop development environment for editing sketches, compiling them, uploading to boards, managing board and library packages, and using the Serial Monitor. It was a long-running entry point for Arduino development, but this repository is now maintained as a legacy codebase.
Features and best fit

Key features
Edit, compile, and upload sketches from one desktop interface
The IDE edits .ino sketches, compiles them, and uploads firmware after a board and serial port are selected. Examples and build output are available in the same desktop workflow.

Add board packages and libraries through built-in managers
Board packages and application libraries can be installed through built-in managers. Device cores such as the AVR core are now maintained in separate repositories and packages.

Inspect board I/O through the Serial Monitor
After uploading a sketch that uses serial communication, the built-in Serial Monitor can display output and send text back to the board for iterative hardware testing.

Best fit
Fits maintenance of projects and training material tied to Arduino IDE 1.x
It remains relevant when older training materials, plugins, or operational procedures depend on the 1.x interface and behavior.

Before adoption
1.8.19 is the final 1.x release and the line is no longer actively developed
Version 1.8.19, published December 21, 2021, is the final security hotfix release. The README identifies this repository as legacy Arduino IDE 1.x and directs current development to Arduino IDE 2.x.
The IDE and board cores are maintained in separate repositories
This repository now primarily contains the IDE code. AVR board support lives in ArduinoCore-avr, so reproducible environments should record both IDE and board-core versions.

Licensing differs across components in the historical repository
The main IDE code is covered by GPL v2 while historical core and library components use LGPL terms. This Product records GPL-2.0-only for the IDE itself; redistribution should still review license.txt and component notices.

Supplemental curator note
This repository is the legacy Arduino IDE 1.x codebase; current IDE development moved to Arduino IDE 2.x. It remains useful for maintaining or reproducing 1.x-specific environments, but new installations should compare 2.x first and document any compatibility reason for staying on 1.x.
Try it in 3 steps
- 1
Get legacy Arduino IDE 1.8.19
Choose the official asset for your operating system. The 1.x line is legacy, so compare Arduino IDE 2.x for new installations.

Open the Blink example
Launch the IDE and open the standard Blink sketch for a minimal board check.
File > Examples > 01.Basics > Blink - 3
Select the board and port, then upload
Select a connected Arduino board you control and verify that compilation and upload complete successfully.
Tools > Board / Tools > Port → Sketch > Upload
