Overview
The AWS Cloud Development Kit (AWS CDK) is an infrastructure-as-code framework that defines AWS infrastructure in programming languages, synthesizes CloudFormation templates, and deploys them. Reusable constructs and stacks let teams encode AWS patterns in application-like code.
Features and best fit
Based on official documentation; not hands-on tested · Content checked:
Key features
Compose AWS resources through high-level reusable constructs
The AWS Construct Library lets teams combine resources and best-practice patterns into reusable classes and stacks.

Best fit
Fits application teams that want to express AWS IaC in familiar programming languages
TypeScript, Python, Java, .NET, and Go teams can reuse infrastructure patterns as libraries while keeping resource definitions close to software-development workflows.

Before adoption
Operate AWS credentials, bootstrapping, and IAM as part of the deployment boundary
Deployment requires AWS credentials and environment permissions. Bootstrap resources and trust policies should be governed as carefully as application code.

Supplemental curator note
AWS CDK raises the abstraction level for reusable AWS infrastructure, but deployment authority still flows through CloudFormation and AWS account permissions. Treat cdk diff, bootstrap configuration, and IAM policy review as part of the code-review boundary.
Try it in 3 steps
- 1
Install AWS CDK CLI 2.272.0
Pin the target CDK CLI release in a supported Node.js environment.
npm install -g aws-cdk@2.272.0 - 2
Create a TypeScript CDK application
Initialize a TypeScript CDK project and its aws-cdk-lib dependencies in an empty directory.
mkdir cdk-demo && cd cdk-demo && cdk init app --language typescript - 3
Synthesize the CloudFormation template
Verify synthesis without deploying to AWS. Before a real deployment, review cdk diff, bootstrapping, and IAM permissions.
