OSS Tanbou

extend Kubernetes APIs to build cloud-native control planes for applications and infrastructure

About these scores

OSS scale score is an unbounded metric that log-compresses and weights Stars, Watchers, Forks, and Contributors. Discovery score is the current OSS scale score minus the score at discovery. Update pace is commits in the last 30 days, growth momentum is the OSS scale score difference within the recent observation window, and OSS health is a 0–100 rating based on available recency, Community Health, and release data.

Overview

Crossplane is a framework for building cloud-native control planes on Kubernetes. Platform teams can define the declarative API schema they expose and use an extensible backend to orchestrate applications and infrastructure. The project also publishes maintained release windows as a CNCF project.

Features and best fit

Key features

Build purpose-specific control-plane APIs on Kubernetes

Crossplane uses the Kubernetes declarative model so platform teams can define APIs for users and reconcile the desired state behind those APIs.

Orchestrate external resources through Compositions and providers

The Get Started flow uses Composition to combine resources behind a higher-level API, with providers reconciling desired state into cloud and infrastructure APIs.

Sources: [2]

Best fit

Fits platform teams centralizing infrastructure policy behind self-service APIs

It is useful when application teams should consume organization-specific platform APIs instead of directly managing every low-level cloud resource and configuration.

Before adoption

Define cluster privileges and provider-credential scope before rollout

Crossplane installs controllers and CRDs into a cluster, while providers can change external resources. RBAC, secret handling, network access, and deletion behavior therefore need explicit operational boundaries.

Track the v2.4 support window and source-build toolchain

The v2.4.2 README lists v2.4 as maintained through May 2027, and its go.mod declares Go 1.26.7 for source builds.

Supplemental curator note

Crossplane is a foundation for using Kubernetes as a platform control plane rather than only an application scheduler. Provider credentials can authorize changes to external cloud resources, so RBAC, credential scope, and deletion behavior should be designed before rollout.

Try it in 3 steps

  1. 1

Add the Crossplane stable Helm repository

Register the official stable chart repository with Helm.

helm repo add crossplane-stable https://charts.crossplane.io/stable && helm repo update
  2. 2

Install Crossplane 2.4.2 into the cluster

Pin version 2.4.2 and install controllers and CRDs. This step changes Kubernetes cluster state.

    helm install crossplane crossplane-stable/crossplane --namespace crossplane-system --create-namespace --version 2.4.2
  3. 3

    Verify the Crossplane pods

Confirm the controllers are Running before adding providers or Compositions. Keep provider-credential scopes minimal because they can authorize changes to external resources.

    kubectl get pods -n crossplane-system
