compile C, C++, Fortran, and other languages across many target architectures with the GNU Compiler Collection

About these scores

OSS scale score is an unbounded metric that log-compresses and weights Stars, Watchers, Forks, and Contributors. Discovery score is the current OSS scale score minus the score at discovery. Update pace is commits in the last 30 days, growth momentum is the OSS scale score difference within the recent observation window, and OSS health is a 0–100 rating based on available recency, Community Health, and release data.

Overview

GCC is the GNU Compiler Collection: a compiler toolchain combining multiple language front ends, optimization infrastructure, target back ends, and runtime libraries. Stable GCC 16.2 is a bug-fix release focused on regressions and serious issues found after 16.1.

Features and best fit

Key features

Compile C, C++, Fortran, and other languages through one toolchain

GCC combines language front ends with target back ends and is used for native builds, cross compilers, and system toolchains across many architectures.

Use integrated optimization, diagnostics, and target code generation

Language front ends feed a shared optimization pipeline and architecture back ends. The source tree also carries runtime and standard-library components such as libstdc++.

Adopt the GCC 16 language-standard baseline

The GCC 16 series changes the C++ front-end default to GNU C++20 and advances selected C++26 and C23 capabilities. GCC 16.2 itself is a regression-fix release rather than a new feature release.

Best fit

Fits OS, embedded, and native toolchain construction

It is appropriate for system software, Linux distributions, cross-compilation environments, and teams that need the compiler itself as part of a controlled toolchain.

Before adoption

Source builds require a bootstrap compiler and libraries such as GMP, MPFR, and MPC

GCC releases are source distributions. Full bootstrap builds consume substantial time, disk, and memory, so evaluation should limit enabled languages and target scope where possible.

Distinguish the compiler GPL from runtime-library exceptions

GCC is governed by GPLv3-or-later terms, while specific runtime and header files can carry the GCC Runtime Library Exception 3.1 as additional permission. The exception applies only to files that explicitly state it.

Supplemental curator note

License handling follows the source COPYING3 and COPYING.RUNTIME files rather than GitHub's automated repository classification. GCC proper is treated as GPL-3.0-or-later, while the runtime exception applies only to files that state it.

Try it in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Fetch the GCC 16.2 source tag

    Pin the checkout to the official release tag in the GitHub mirror. The source tree is large, so account for disk usage.

    git clone --depth 1 --branch releases/gcc-16.2.0 https://github.com/gcc-mirror/gcc.git gcc-16.2
  2. 2

    Verify the release version and runtime exception

    Confirm version 16.2.0 and inspect the separate runtime-library exception notice.

    cat gcc-16.2/gcc/BASE-VER && head -n 12 gcc-16.2/COPYING.RUNTIME
  3. 3

    Inspect configure options before attempting a build

    Do not run a full bootstrap build here. A real build needs prerequisites such as GMP, MPFR, and MPC and should limit target and enabled languages when possible.

    mkdir -p gcc-build && cd gcc-build && ../gcc-16.2/configure --help | head -n 40
