Auto-discover SNMP network devices and monitor their health and performance in one interface

About these scores

OSS scale score is an unbounded metric that log-compresses and weights Stars, Watchers, Forks, and Contributors. Discovery score is the current OSS scale score minus the score at discovery. Update pace is commits in the last 30 days, growth momentum is the OSS scale score difference within the recent observation window, and OSS health is a 0–100 rating based on available recency, Community Health, and release data.

Overview

LibreNMS is a system for continuously monitoring routers, switches, servers, and other network devices. It discovers devices primarily through SNMP and presents collected health and performance information in a web interface. Operators can control networks and credentials while reducing the work of registering every device by hand.

Features and best fit

Based on official documentation; not hands-on tested · Content checked:

Key features

Continuously find managed devices through several discovery methods

After allowed network ranges and SNMP details are configured, LibreNMS can discover devices through xDP protocols such as LLDP and CDP, as well as OSPF, BGP, ARP, and an SNMP scan. Exclusion ranges help prevent indiscriminate additions outside the intended estate. Discovery runs frequently for new devices and periodically for established ones.

Best fit

Fits operations teams monitoring mixed vendors and operating systems

LibreNMS fits network operations that need to bring Cisco, Juniper, Linux, FreeBSD, and many other devices into one monitoring system. It is especially useful where SNMP supplies the common data plane and neighboring devices should be found from the existing monitored estate.

Before adoption

Plan discovery scope and credentials, then maintain the monitoring stack

Auto-discovery requires at least one existing device, plus configured SNMP credentials and allowed subnets. A conventional installation includes Linux, PHP, MariaDB or MySQL, a web server, RRDTool, and other services that operators must maintain. An official Docker image is available, but database passwords and persistent data remain the operator’s responsibility. GitHub reports NOASSERTION for the SPDX field; the upstream README describes GPLv3-or-later terms with an additional exception for bundled software.

Supplemental curator note

LibreNMS is compelling when SNMP can serve as a common monitoring entry point across otherwise fragmented device vendors. Evaluate credential storage, discovery boundaries, data retention, and upgrade work alongside the breadth of supported hardware.

Try it in 3 steps

  1. 1

Download the pinned official Compose example

Prepare Docker Engine and Docker Compose, then enter the official example at the reviewed commit.

    curl -fL https://github.com/librenms/docker/archive/afb3e410afbbf8a10a2204a957f16160943fcf3f.zip -o librenms-docker.zip unzip librenms-docker.zip cd docker-afb3e410afbbf8a10a2204a957f16160943fcf3f/examples/compose
  2. 2

    Replace the database password

Before running the command, replace replace-with-a-strong-password with a strong password you generated. The Compose file passes MYSQL_PASSWORD to LibreNMS as DB_PASSWORD.

    sed -i.bak 's/^MYSQL_PASSWORD=.*/MYSQL_PASSWORD=replace-with-a-strong-password/' .env
  3. 3

Start the containers and open setup

Run from the same directory and open http://localhost:8000. The reviewed Compose file still uses latest for some images, so pin digests and define upgrades for ongoing operation.

    sudo docker compose -f compose.yml up -d
