Overview
Plane is a project management platform that brings Work Items, Cycles, Modules, Views, Pages, and Analytics into one project space. It goes beyond listing issues: short execution windows are handled through Cycles, larger initiatives through Modules, longer-term planning through roadmaps, while saved Views and Pages keep filtered work and documentation close to the same project model. Plane Cloud is available for managed use, and Docker and Kubernetes deployment paths make it a candidate for teams that want a Linear- or Jira-style workflow on infrastructure they control.

Use the same work-item model from day-to-day execution through cycles and larger initiatives
Plane uses Work Items for day-to-day tasks, Cycles for time-bounded execution, and Modules for breaking larger initiatives into manageable parts. Work Items support rich text, file uploads, sub-properties, and relationships to other issues, making the model more suitable for product and engineering work than a lightweight checklist. Cycles add progress tracking such as burn-down charts so teams can examine flow as well as individual task state.

Keep filtered views, project notes, and analytics next to the work rather than in separate tools
Views let teams build and share filters over relevant Work Items. Pages add a rich-text documentation surface with AI capabilities, allowing ideas and specifications to live near the work they describe. Analytics provides real-time views over Plane data for identifying trends and blockers. This makes Plane most useful when a team wants issue tracking, lightweight project documentation, and progress analysis to share one operating context rather than being spread across separate SaaS products.

Plane fits teams that want development tasks, sprint-like planning, feature-level grouping, roadmaps, and project notes in one environment. Plane Cloud provides the lowest-friction path, while Docker and Kubernetes are available when data and operations need to stay under organizational control. The Community self-hosting guide covers Docker Compose and Docker Swarm setup, upgrades, and backups, and gives 2 vCPU and 4 GB RAM as a starting cloud-server baseline.
Self-hosting adds operational ownership, and license boundaries need file-level review
A self-hosted deployment leaves public URLs, CORS, email configuration, backups, upgrades, and production infrastructure with the operator. Email configuration is relevant for inviting teammates, while internet-facing deployments also need the usual TLS, authentication, availability, and recovery decisions that a managed cloud service would otherwise absorb.
The top-level README and LICENSE.txt identify GNU AGPLv3, but the current repository also contains files explicitly marked SPDX-License-Identifier: LicenseRef-Plane-Commercial. Anyone modifying, redistributing, or embedding Plane code should therefore avoid assuming that every file in the repository has the same AGPLv3 terms and should verify the Community / Commercial edition boundary and the headers of the code they actually use.
