Overview
Mastodon is self-hostable microblogging software that connects servers through ActivityPub. As part of the Fediverse, users can follow and reply across different software while using chronological timelines, media, moderation, and APIs.
Features and best fit
Based on official documentation; not hands-on tested · Content checked:
Combine a local community with federation across the Fediverse
It provides real-time chronological timelines, image and video attachments, private posts, locked accounts, phrase filters, muting, blocking, reports, and moderation. As an OAuth2 provider it exposes REST and Streaming APIs that support a third-party client ecosystem.

For communities that want to own policy and data operations
It fits organizations that want to manage registration, moderation rules, branding, and data retention without depending on a central service while still interacting with external instances. Pilot staffing, reports, backups, and federation policy on a small instance.

Take responsibility for federation, moderation, and the full stack
The current README requires Ruby 3.3+, PostgreSQL 14+, Redis 7+, Node.js 22+, and FFmpeg 5.1+, with Docker configurations and a standalone guide. A public instance also owns spam and abuse response, legal obligations, media storage, upgrades, and federation decisions. Mastodon uses AGPLv3.
