OSS Tanbou

edit, query, and collaborate on Postgres through a spreadsheet-like interface

About these scores

OSS scale score is an unbounded metric that log-compresses and weights Stars, Watchers, Forks, and Contributors. Discovery score is the current OSS scale score minus the score at discovery. Update pace is commits in the last 30 days, growth momentum is the OSS scale score difference within the recent observation window, and OSS health is a 0–100 rating based on available recency, Community Health, and release data.

Overview

Mathesar is a self-hosted web application that exposes PostgreSQL tables through a spreadsheet-like interface for browsing, editing, querying, and collaboration without requiring SQL. It works directly with existing Postgres rather than inserting a proprietary data layer.

Features and best fit

Based on official documentation; not hands-on tested · Content checked:

Key features

Edit existing PostgreSQL tables through a grid interface

Create and change schemas and tables, add or modify records, and sort, filter, or group data in the UI while preserving PostgreSQL schemas, types, constraints, and foreign keys underneath.

Explore data without SQL through the query builder

Data Explorer lets users assemble joins and conditions visually so people without SQL expertise can query related data.

Sources: [2]

Extend collaboration with forms and native database permissions

Share forms that insert new records and manage access through PostgreSQL roles and privileges exposed through Mathesar's administration UI.

Best fit

Fits teams giving business users controlled access to PostgreSQL

It is relevant when a team wants Airtable-like usability while keeping data in existing Postgres and exposing editing, querying, and data-entry workflows to non-developers.

Before adoption

The project is currently in Public Beta

The README describes Mathesar as stable and feature-rich enough for production implementation but not yet at the broadly adopted Public stage. Sensitive production data should use deliberate permissions, backups, and staged rollout.

Harden Docker Compose credentials and persistence for production

The official Compose stack runs PostgreSQL, Mathesar, and Caddy and persists database, media, secrets, and certificate data under msar. Public deployments should replace default database credentials and plan backups.

Check PostgreSQL support and admin changes in 0.12.0

The 0.12.0 upgrade notes no longer support PostgreSQL 13 and require PostgreSQL 14 or later. Django's built-in admin is also disabled by default.

Review GPL-3.0 and third-party module licensing

Mathesar is licensed under GPL-3.0 and also includes derivatives of third-party open-source modules under MIT. Redistribution and modification should account for the applicable terms.

Supplemental curator note

Mathesar works directly with existing PostgreSQL schemas, tables, and roles instead of importing data into a proprietary abstraction. The project is currently in Public Beta, so production connections should use deliberate permissions, backups, and staged rollout.

Try it in 3 steps

  1. 1

Download the Mathesar 0.12.0 Compose file

Pin the official Docker Compose setup to stable release 0.12.0. Docker 23+ and Docker Compose 2.10+ are required.

    wget https://raw.githubusercontent.com/mathesar-foundation/mathesar/0.12.0/docker-compose.yml
  2. 2

    Set a local database password

Create the .env file automatically loaded by Compose with localhost and a random PostgreSQL password.

    printf 'DOMAIN_NAME=http://localhost\nPOSTGRES_PASSWORD=%s\n' "$(openssl rand -hex 24)" > .env
  3. 3

    Start Mathesar

Start Mathesar, PostgreSQL, and Caddy, then open http://localhost and create the first administrator account.

    docker compose -f docker-compose.yml up -d
