build static project documentation sites from Markdown and a YAML configuration

About these scores

OSS scale score is an unbounded metric that log-compresses and weights Stars, Watchers, Forks, and Contributors. Discovery score is the current OSS scale score minus the score at discovery. Update pace is commits in the last 30 days, growth momentum is the OSS scale score difference within the recent observation window, and OSS health is a 0–100 rating based on available recency, Community Health, and release data.

Overview

MkDocs is a documentation tool that turns Markdown project documentation into a static HTML site. A single YAML file controls the site, a development server previews changes, and the generated files can be published on any static host.

Features and best fit

Based on official documentation; not hands-on tested · Content checked:

Key features

Manage pages and navigation with a small configuration

Markdown files remain the documentation source, while mkdocs.yml defines the site name, page order, theme, and other settings. Running mkdocs build creates static output in site, including a search index and sitemap.

Extend presentation and processing with themes and plugins

You can use the bundled themes, choose a third-party theme, and add plugins or Markdown extensions for project-specific presentation and processing.

Best fit

Fits teams that version documentation with source code

It suits API guides, runbooks, and developer sites whose reviewable text belongs in a repository and whose output can be served statically. The development server rebuilds on saved changes and reloads the browser.

Before adoption

Check the Python requirement and ownership of extensions

Release 1.6.1 requires Python 3.8 or newer. Core support does not cover problems in third-party themes, plugins, or extensions, and publishing still requires a deployment method appropriate for the chosen static host.

Supplemental curator note

Static output makes the result easy to place on an existing web host. Evaluate the maintenance and support of any third-party theme or plugin separately from the MkDocs core.

Try it in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Create an isolated Python environment

    Use Python 3.8 or newer on macOS or Linux and isolate the demo dependencies.

    python3 -m venv mkdocs-demo-env && . mkdocs-demo-env/bin/activate
  2. 2

    Install MkDocs 1.6.1

    Pin the installation to MkDocs 1.6.1.

    python -m pip install "mkdocs==1.6.1"
  3. 3

    Generate a static site from the starter project

    Create a documentation project, treat warnings as errors, and confirm that HTML output was produced.

    mkdocs new mkdocs-demo && cd mkdocs-demo && mkdocs build --strict && test -f site/index.html
