Overview
NetBox is a Django application for managing connected data-center infrastructure and network information. It brings devices, racks, cabling, circuits, IP addresses, and VLANs into one model and makes that model available to automation through REST and GraphQL APIs.
Features and best fit

Key features
Connect infrastructure and IP data in one model
DCIM features cover sites, racks, devices, interfaces, cables, and circuits, while IPAM covers prefixes, addresses, VRFs, and VLANs. Teams can trace relationships between physical connectivity and logical addressing instead of maintaining disconnected spreadsheets.

Feed automation through APIs and events
The REST API reads and writes the model, while the read-only GraphQL API can retrieve selected fields and related data in one query. Webhooks, custom scripts, and plugins extend workflows so configuration generation and provisioning can consume the same source of truth.
Best fit
Manage intended network state across teams
It fits organizations that standardize multiple sites or data centers and need trusted input for network automation. It is especially useful when teams record planned changes, assignments, and connections before applying them to the live network.

Before adoption
Operate PostgreSQL, Redis, and the application stack
The official v4.7 requirements are Python 3.12 through 3.14, PostgreSQL 15 or later, and Redis 6.0 or later; this is not a standalone SQLite application. Production also calls for Gunicorn or uWSGI, an HTTP server, and a background worker, with backups, upgrades, and plugin compatibility treated as operating responsibilities.

Supplemental curator note
NetBox stands out as a modeled source of intended network state that automation can consume through APIs. Define ownership for data changes and its boundary with monitoring systems that observe live state before rollout.
Try it in 3 steps
- 1
Enter the 4.7.2 source tree
With Git and Python 3.12 through 3.14 available, fetch only the published tag. A full deployment also requires PostgreSQL 15 or later and Redis 6.0 or later.
git clone --depth 1 --branch v4.7.2 https://github.com/netbox-community/netbox.git netbox-demo && cd netbox-demo - 2
Inspect the required settings
Confirm that the configuration example contains the five settings required for a new installation. This check does not connect to a database or create secret values.
python3 -c "from pathlib import Path; p=Path('netbox/netbox/configuration_example.py').read_text(); required=['ALLOWED_HOSTS','API_TOKEN_PEPPERS','DATABASES','REDIS','SECRET_KEY']; print('required settings:', ', '.join(k for k in required if k in p))" - 3
Try the bundled secret generator
Generate and measure a candidate without saving or printing it. Continue through the official PostgreSQL and Redis setup for a full startup test.
python3 netbox/generate_secret_key.py | python3 -c "import sys; value=sys.stdin.read().strip(); print('generated secret length:', len(value)); assert len(value) >= 50"
