Model project dependencies and run only the tasks that a change requires

About these scores

OSS scale score is an unbounded metric that log-compresses and weights Stars, Watchers, Forks, and Contributors. Discovery score is the current OSS scale score minus the score at discovery. Update pace is commits in the last 30 days, growth momentum is the OSS scale score difference within the recent observation window, and OSS health is a 0–100 rating based on available recency, Community Health, and release data.

Overview

Nx is a development tool for running builds, tests, linting, and other tasks across monorepos or multiple projects according to their dependencies. Its task graph, cache, affected analysis, and plugins provide one project model from local development through CI.

Features and best fit

Based on official documentation; not hands-on tested · Content checked:

Key features

Select required tasks from the project graph

Nx models dependencies between projects and tasks as a graph and can target only projects affected by a change. Its local cache reuses results when task inputs have not changed.

Use framework plugins for configuration and generators

Plugins for Angular, React, Next.js, Node.js, and other ecosystems provide project generators, task inference, and update migrations. Teams can add Nx incrementally to an existing repository or start with an integrated workspace.

Best fit

Align local development and CI in a large repository

Nx fits teams that keep multiple applications and libraries in one repository and want builds or tests scoped to each change. The project graph and nx show let teams inspect the detected structure before automating it.

Before adoption

Separate the open-source core from commercial services

The Nx core and plugins in the repository use the MIT License. Some CI capabilities promoted from the README, including remote caching, distributed task execution, and self-healing CI, connect to the Nx Cloud service. Evaluate required features, pricing, and data flow separately.

Choose the adoption boundary for an existing workspace

Plugin-inferred tasks can overlap with handwritten configuration. Before broad adoption, choose the projects, package manager, cache inputs, and CI environment, then inspect generated files and the task graph in a small workspace.

Supplemental curator note

Compare the local graph, task, and cache capabilities separately from CI features delivered through Nx Cloud. Start with a small workspace and inspect both its project graph and generated configuration.

Try it in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Create a TypeScript workspace

Use Node.js 26.x, 24.x, ^22.12.0, or ^20.19.0 and the pinned official generator to create a minimal workspace without connecting Nx Cloud.

    npx create-nx-workspace@22.7.12 nx-demo --preset=ts --workspaceType=integrated --interactive=false --nxCloud=skip --packageManager=npm
  2. 2

    Generate a library

Generate a minimal TypeScript library so the workspace contains a project managed by Nx.

    cd nx-demo && npx nx g @nx/js:lib packages/example --unitTestRunner=none --linter=none --bundler=none --no-interactive
  3. 3

Inspect the project and dependency graph

List detected projects and export their dependencies to output/project-graph.html.

npx nx show projects && npx nx graph --file=output/project-graph.html
