Overview
OGRE is a rendering engine for adding scene management, materials, shadows, animation, and related 3D graphics to C++ applications. It abstracts OpenGL, Vulkan, Direct3D, Metal, and other render systems for games, simulators, and visualization tools.
Features and best fit
Based on official documentation; not hands-on tested · Content checked:
Key features
Manage scenes and rendering resources together
A common API covers scene graphs, meshes, materials, lighting, shadows, and animation. The Sample Browser runs focused demonstrations for inspecting features and the selected render system.
Best fit
Use it as the 3D layer in a custom application
OGRE fits robotics and industrial visualization, simulators, and custom games that need detailed control over rendering. It is not a complete game engine bundling physics, audio, game rules, and an editor.

Before adoption
Provision platform development libraries and a display
Building the Sample Browser on Linux requires a C++ compiler, CMake, and development files for X11, OpenGL, SDL2, and related dependencies. Runtime requires a working display and GPU driver for the selected render system.

Supplemental curator note
Before adoption, select one required render system and run the Sample Browser on the target environment, checking drivers, plugins, and media packaging together.
Try it in 3 steps
- 1
Fetch the pinned source
Clone OGRE v14.6.0 and keep configuration and build commands in this directory.
git clone --branch v14.6.0 --depth 1 https://github.com/OGRECave/ogre.git ogre-demo && cd ogre-demo - 2
Configure and build the OpenGL Sample Browser
On Linux with a C++ compiler, CMake, SDL2, X11, and OpenGL development files, build the Sample Browser for OpenGL 3+.
cmake -S . -B build -DOGRE_BUILD_SAMPLES=ON -DOGRE_BUILD_RENDERSYSTEM_GL3PLUS=ON -DOGRE_BUILD_RENDERSYSTEM_VULKAN=OFF && cmake --build build --target SampleBrowser --parallel 2 - 3
Run the Sample Browser with OpenGL
In a display session with a compatible OpenGL GPU driver, start the browser, select OpenGL 3+, and inspect the official samples.
./build/bin/SampleBrowser
