Provide secure remote login and file transfer across Unix-like systems

About these scores

OSS scale score is an unbounded metric that log-compresses and weights Stars, Watchers, Forks, and Contributors. Discovery score is the current OSS scale score minus the score at discovery. Update pace is commits in the last 30 days, growth momentum is the OSS scale score difference within the recent observation window, and OSS health is a 0–100 rating based on available recency, Community Health, and release data.

Overview

Portable OpenSSH ports SSH 2 clients, servers, scp, sftp, and key-management tools to many Unix-like systems. Public-key authentication and encrypted transport protect remote operations.

Features and best fit

Based on official documentation; not hands-on tested · Content checked:

Key features

Provide connection, transfer, and key tools together

It includes ssh, sshd, scp, sftp, ssh-keygen, and ssh-agent for terminal access, key creation, and transfers with shared formats.

Sources: [1][3]

Best fit

Fit server administration and automated authentication

It suits administrator logins, public-key authentication for Git or delivery jobs, and secure interactive or unattended transfers.

Sources: [1]

Before adoption

Review crypto dependencies and operational policy

Building needs a C89-or-later compiler, standard headers, and make. Available features depend on libcrypto and zlib, while sshd authentication, authorized keys, and update policy require separate design. LICENCE collects multiple BSD-style and component-specific terms.

Supplemental curator note

Use the pinned ssh-keygen only to create a temporary Ed25519 key, verify permissions and its SHA256 fingerprint without printing private contents, and leave sshd and host configuration untouched.

Try it in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Fetch the pinned source

    On a Unix-like system, install bash or zsh, Git, Autoconf 2.69, Automake 1.16.1, a C89-or-later compiler, make, standard headers, and zlib development headers and library; fetch V_10_2_P1 and continue in openssh-demo.

    git clone --branch V_10_2_P1 --depth 1 https://github.com/openssh/openssh-portable.git openssh-demo && cd openssh-demo
  2. 2

    Build the pinned ssh-keygen

    Let configure detect host libcrypto and zlib, then build only ssh-keygen without starting a server.

    autoreconf && ./configure && make -j2 ssh-keygen
  3. 3

    Verify temporary-key permissions and fingerprint

    Generate an Ed25519 key with mode 0600 in an owned temporary directory, print only its public-key SHA256 fingerprint, and delete the owned key on exit.

    (tmp_dir=$(mktemp -d) || exit 1; trap 'rm -rf "$tmp_dir"' EXIT; umask 077; ./ssh-keygen -q -t ed25519 -N '' -C oss-tanbou-demo -f "$tmp_dir/id_ed25519" && mode=$(stat -c %a "$tmp_dir/id_ed25519" 2>/dev/null || stat -f %Lp "$tmp_dir/id_ed25519") && test "$mode" = 600 && (set -o pipefail; ./ssh-keygen -lf "$tmp_dir/id_ed25519.pub" -E sha256 | tee "$tmp_dir/fingerprint.txt") && grep -F 'SHA256:' "$tmp_dir/fingerprint.txt")
