About these scores

OSS scale score is an unbounded metric that log-compresses and weights Stars, Watchers, Forks, and Contributors. Discovery score is the current OSS scale score minus the score at discovery. Update pace is commits in the last 30 days, growth momentum is the OSS scale score difference within the recent observation window, and OSS health is a 0–100 rating based on available recency, Community Health, and release data.

Overview

redis-rs is a Rust client for Redis, Valkey, and other RESP-compatible servers. It provides typed command traits, synchronous and asynchronous connections, cluster support, TLS, and optional module APIs.

Features and best fit

Based on official documentation; not hands-on tested · Content checked:

Key features

Map Redis commands into Rust types with TypedCommands and Commands

TypedCommands provides opinionated result types for common commands, while Commands uses FromRedisValue for flexible conversion. Manual command construction and pipelines remain available.

Add Tokio or Smol async I/O, multiplexing, clusters, and TLS

Runtime features enable async clients, and MultiplexedConnection can be cloned and shared safely. Cluster clients, connection management, native TLS, and rustls are available through optional features.

Best fit

Fits Rust backends using Redis or Valkey for caching, sessions, and shared state

It works across simple key/value operations, pipelines, clusters, Pub/Sub, and module commands while letting applications choose synchronous or asynchronous operation.

Before adoption

Check Rust 1.88+, server compatibility, blocking commands, and cluster patches

redis 1.7.1 requires Rust 1.88 and its CI covers Redis 6+ and Valkey 7+. Version 1.7.1 fixes READONLY handling for unsupported servers and an async cluster refresh race that could deadlock, so cluster deployments should stay current on patch releases.

Supplemental curator note

redis-rs supports both synchronous and asynchronous access in one client library. Async MultiplexedConnection values are cheap to clone and share, so non-blocking workloads do not necessarily require a traditional connection pool.

Try it in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Clone the reviewed redis-rs release

Clone redis-rs 1.7.1. Rust 1.88 or newer, Make, and Redis tooling are required.

    git clone --depth 1 --branch redis-1.7.1 https://github.com/redis-rs/redis-rs.git && cd redis-rs
  2. 2

    Build the core crate

Use the build command documented in the project development guide to compile the redis crate.

    make build
  3. 3

    Run the basic test suite

Run the documented basic tests. Redis tooling must be discoverable; upstream CI covers Redis 6+ and Valkey 7+.

    make test
