Overview
Dart Sass is the reference implementation of Sass. It compiles SCSS/Sass into CSS and is distributed as standalone archives and the npm sass package with both CLI and JavaScript APIs.
Features and best fit

Key features
Compile SCSS/Sass to CSS from the CLI or npm package
The sass CLI compiles source stylesheets to CSS, and projects can install the compiler with npm install --save-dev sass.

Run Sass from build tooling with compile and compileAsync
The modern JavaScript API exposes compile() and compileAsync() for bundlers and custom build pipelines.

Use first-class module APIs introduced in the 1.105 line
Version 1.105.0 added meta.load(), meta.get-module(), and meta.css() to expand module-oriented metaprogramming.

Best fit
Fits codebases that need the current official compiler for existing Sass assets and design systems
It is the standard choice when a frontend project wants Sass syntax, specification tracking, and both CLI and programmatic compilation.

Before adoption
Avoid starting new integrations on the legacy JavaScript API
The Node Sass-compatible render() and renderSync() API is deprecated and documented for removal in Dart Sass 2.0.0.

Browser execution does not have filesystem compilation APIs
compile() and compileAsync() are unavailable in browsers; browser use relies on string APIs and custom importers when external content is needed.

Supplemental curator note
Dart Sass is the canonical Sass implementation. New JavaScript integrations should use the modern compile/compileAsync APIs rather than adopting the deprecated legacy render/renderSync API.
Try it in 3 steps
- 1
Install Dart Sass 1.105.1 in an isolated project
Pin the reviewed release in a temporary project without changing an existing codebase.
demo=$(mktemp -d "${TMPDIR:-/tmp}/dart-sass.XXXXXX") && cd "$demo" && npm init -y >/dev/null && npm install --save-exact --save-dev sass@1.105.1 - 2
Create SCSS with a variable and nested selector
Create a minimal SCSS input that exercises a Sass variable and selector nesting.
printf "%s\n" '$accent: #663399;' '.card {' ' color: $accent;' ' &:hover { color: white; }' '}' > input.scss - 3
Compile it to CSS with the sass CLI
Generate CSS with version 1.105.1 and confirm the nested selector was expanded into normal CSS.
npx sass input.scss output.css && grep -q ".card:hover" output.css
