Build Zephyr-based embedded applications for Nordic Semiconductor products

About these scores

OSS scale score is an unbounded metric that log-compresses and weights Stars, Watchers, Forks, and Contributors. Discovery score is the current OSS scale score minus the score at discovery. Update pace is commits in the last 30 days, growth momentum is the OSS scale score difference within the recent observation window, and OSS health is a 0–100 rating based on available recency, Community Health, and release data.

Overview

nRF Connect SDK is a software development kit for applications targeting Nordic Semiconductor wireless SoCs and development kits. This repository contains core libraries, samples, applications, and the west manifest that pins Zephyr and other component revisions.

Features and best fit

Based on official documentation; not hands-on tested · Content checked:

Key features

Integrate wireless capabilities into embedded applications

The SDK provides protocols and samples for Bluetooth Low Energy, Thread, Matter, Wi-Fi, and cellular IoT, depending on the target product. It combines Zephyr configuration through Kconfig and Devicetree with Nordic-specific drivers and services.

Pin multiple repositories as one SDK release

west.yml coordinates revisions of Zephyr, MCUboot, libraries, and other components. west update retrieves the source set that matches the selected SDK release.

Best fit

Move from Nordic evaluation boards toward product development

It fits teams that start with official samples and progressively add connectivity, power management, and secure boot for a target board. Samples that support native simulator can verify a build path on Linux without flashing hardware.

Before adoption

Check toolchain, host OS, and board requirements first

The official toolchain and west fetch multiple repositories, so initial setup takes storage and time. Flashing and validating wireless behavior require a supported Nordic board and runner. Native simulator targets Linux and does not validate hardware-specific peripherals.

Review the license of each component

The sdk-nrf LICENSE identifies LicenseRef-Nordic-5-Clause and includes conditions such as use with Nordic Semiconductor integrated circuits. Zephyr and other components fetched through the west manifest retain their own licenses.

Supplemental curator note

Fix the intended SoC, board, and SDK release before comparing features. The SDK assembles open-source components, but sdk-nrf itself carries Nordic-specific license conditions.

Try it in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Initialize a west workspace

On Linux with west installed, fetch the manifest for the fixed release into the ncs directory.

    west init -m https://github.com/nrfconnect/sdk-nrf --mr v3.4.1 ncs
  2. 2

    Fetch the SDK component repositories

Fetch Zephyr and the other revisions pinned by the manifest. This requires substantial storage and download time.

    cd ncs && west update
  3. 3

    Build a software-only sample

With the nRF Connect SDK toolchain active on Linux, build for native simulator without flashing hardware or exercising a radio.

    west build -b native_sim/native/64 zephyr/samples/hello_world
