Overview
SFML gives C++ applications a cross-platform interface to multimedia facilities. Separate modules cover windows and input, 2D graphics, audio, and networking, providing a foundation for games, visualization, and interactive tools.
Features and best fit

Key features
Combine only the multimedia modules an application needs
System underpins the library; Window handles windows and input, Graphics adds sprites and text, Audio covers playback and capture, and Network provides sockets and HTTP facilities. Release 3.1.0 expands support for complex text layout, TLS and HTTPS, IPv6, and SFTP.
Best fit
Grow from a small interactive program with a versioned build
It fits C++ projects that need a drawing loop, keyboard or gamepad input, sound, and basic networking under one design. A pinned FetchContent declaration and explicit module links keep the build reviewable from a teaching demo to a product shipped on several operating systems.
Before adoption
Validate the SFML 3 API and each delivery environment
Building 3.1.0 itself requires CMake 3.28 or newer, and its public build uses C++17. Window systems, OpenGL, audio devices, and shared libraries remain platform-dependent, so a successful compile does not prove runtime behavior on delivery targets. SFML 2 users must account for API changes. GitHub reports Zlib, while bundled external libraries retain their own licenses.

Supplemental curator note
Begin with only the modules the application needs, then test windowing, audio devices, and OpenGL behavior on each distribution target. Use 3.1.0 documentation because SFML 2 examples target a different API.
Try it in 3 steps
- 1
Create a CMake project
With CMake 3.28 or newer, a C++17 compiler, Git, make, and network access, write an LF-terminated build that fetches only SFML 3.1.0 System. Continue in the same terminal and working directory.
mkdir sfml-demo && cd sfml-demo && printf '%s\n' 'cmake_minimum_required(VERSION 3.28)' 'project(sfml_demo LANGUAGES CXX)' 'include(FetchContent)' 'set(SFML_BUILD_AUDIO OFF CACHE BOOL "" FORCE)' 'set(SFML_BUILD_GRAPHICS OFF CACHE BOOL "" FORCE)' 'set(SFML_BUILD_NETWORK OFF CACHE BOOL "" FORCE)' 'set(SFML_BUILD_WINDOW OFF CACHE BOOL "" FORCE)' 'FetchContent_Declare(SFML GIT_REPOSITORY https://github.com/SFML/SFML.git GIT_TAG 3.1.0 GIT_SHALLOW ON)' 'FetchContent_MakeAvailable(SFML)' 'add_executable(sfml-demo main.cpp)' 'target_compile_features(sfml-demo PRIVATE cxx_std_17)' 'target_link_libraries(sfml-demo PRIVATE SFML::System)' 'set_target_properties(sfml-demo PROPERTIES RUNTIME_OUTPUT_DIRECTORY "${CMAKE_BINARY_DIR}/bin")' > CMakeLists.txt - 2
Print the runtime version
Write LF-terminated C++ that uses sf::version(), added in 3.1.0, to report the library loaded at runtime.
printf '%s\n' '#include <SFML/System/Version.hpp>' '#include <iostream>' '' 'int main()' '{' ' std::cout << sf::version().string << std::endl;' '}' > main.cpp - 3
Build and verify the pinned release
Use the single-config Unix Makefiles generator to build System from the fixed tag, then run the executable emitted under build/bin and assert that it loaded version 3.1.0. The program opens no window and uses no audio device.
cmake -S . -B build -G "Unix Makefiles" && cmake --build build --target sfml-demo && test "$(./build/bin/sfml-demo)" = "3.1.0"
