Overview
modern-normalize normalizes browser default styles for current browsers. Compared with normalize.css, it focuses on modern targets and adds opinionated defaults such as box-sizing: border-box, more consistent fonts, and a readable tab size.
Features and best fit
Based on official documentation; not hands-on tested · Content checked:
Key features

Normalize box sizing, fonts, and tab size as part of the base layer
Differences from normalize.css include global box-sizing: border-box, more consistent default fonts, and a more readable tab size.
Best fit
Fits modern-only frontends that want a smaller, slightly opinionated normalization layer
It is suitable when evergreen browsers are the support baseline and teams prefer fewer compatibility rules than normalize.css.

Before adoption
Browser support is explicitly limited to the latest Chrome, Firefox, and Safari

Supplemental curator note
modern-normalize intentionally narrows support compared with normalize.css and targets the latest Chrome, Firefox, and Safari. Projects that still support IE or older browsers should review that compatibility difference before adopting it.
Try it in 3 steps
- 1
Install modern-normalize 3.0.1 in an isolated project
Pin the stable release and inspect its modern-browser normalization layer.
demo=$(mktemp -d "${TMPDIR:-/tmp}/modern-normalize.XXXXXX") && cd "$demo" && npm init -y >/dev/null && npm install --save-exact modern-normalize@3.0.1 - 2
Create HTML that loads modern-normalize
Load the single stylesheet intended for the latest Chrome, Firefox, and Safari.
printf "%s\n" '<!doctype html>' '<html><head><link rel="stylesheet" href="./node_modules/modern-normalize/modern-normalize.css"></head>' '<body><main><h1>Modern normalized page</h1><button>Button</button></main></body></html>' > index.html - 3
Verify modern-normalize-specific base rules
Confirm the global border-box model and readable tab-size defaults that distinguish it from normalize.css.
grep -q "box-sizing: border-box" node_modules/modern-normalize/modern-normalize.css && grep -q "tab-size: 4" node_modules/modern-normalize/modern-normalize.css
