A web system for tracking devices, licenses, and asset assignments in one inventory

About these scores

OSS scale score is an unbounded metric that log-compresses and weights Stars, Watchers, Forks, and Contributors. Discovery score is the current OSS scale score minus the score at discovery. Update pace is commits in the last 30 days, growth momentum is the OSS scale score difference within the recent observation window, and OSS health is a 0–100 rating based on available recency, Community Health, and release data.

Overview

Snipe-IT is a browser-based application for managing IT assets such as laptops, purchase records, assignments to people, and software licenses. It is built on Laravel 12 and can be self-hosted or run from the official Docker image.

Features and best fit

Based on official documentation; not hands-on tested · Content checked:

Key features

Track custody of assets and licenses

Teams can record who has a device, when it was purchased, and which software licenses are assigned. It provides a shared operational inventory for checkout, return, and depreciation records.

Best fit

Self-host an organizational IT inventory

The web application can run on macOS, Linux, or Windows servers, and an official Docker image is available. It fits organizations moving from spreadsheets to an ongoing record of relationships between assets and users.

Before adoption

Provide a database and secure environment configuration

Snipe-IT is not a standalone executable; it needs a web server and database. Its .env includes APP_KEY, APP_URL, database, and mail settings. The official Compose file starts MariaDB and persistent volumes, so evaluations still need explicit credentials, a localhost-only bind, and disposable data.

Supplemental curator note

This web application stores internal asset records. Even for evaluation, use a strong APP_KEY and database credentials and bind it to localhost. Production operation also needs TLS, backups, mail, and an upgrade plan.

Try it in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Clone v8.8.0

Clone the fixed official release into a disposable evaluation directory with no production data.

    git clone --branch v8.8.0 --depth 1 https://github.com/grokability/snipe-it.git snipe-it-demo
  2. 2

    Create a localhost configuration

Set evaluation-only MariaDB credentials and a localhost-bound port. Replace APP_KEY with a strong generated value before starting anything.

    cd snipe-it-demo && cp .env.example .env && sed -i.bak -e 's|^APP_ENV=.*|APP_ENV=local|' -e 's|^APP_DEBUG=.*|APP_DEBUG=true|' -e 's|^APP_URL=.*|APP_URL=http://localhost:8000|' -e 's|^DB_HOST=.*|DB_HOST=db|' -e 's|^DB_DATABASE=.*|DB_DATABASE=snipeit|' -e 's|^DB_USERNAME=.*|DB_USERNAME=snipeit|' -e 's|^DB_PASSWORD=.*|DB_PASSWORD=local_only_change_me|' .env && printf '%s\n' 'APP_VERSION=v8.8.0' 'APP_PORT=127.0.0.1:8000' 'MYSQL_ROOT_PASSWORD=local_root_change_me' >> .env
  3. 3

    Validate the Compose configuration

Expand and validate the Compose configuration without starting containers or writing to the database. After setting APP_KEY, follow the official instructions if you choose to start it.

    docker compose config --quiet
