Turn natural-language input into typed data that applications can validate and act on

About these scores

OSS scale score is an unbounded metric that log-compresses and weights Stars, Watchers, Forks, and Contributors. Discovery score is the current OSS scale score minus the score at discovery. Update pace is commits in the last 30 days, growth momentum is the OSS scale score difference within the recent observation window, and OSS health is a 0–100 rating based on available recency, Community Health, and release data.

Overview

TypeChat is a library for translating a user’s natural-language input into typed data that an application can process. Supported intents are expressed with TypeScript types or Zod schemas, and the library coordinates the model request, response validation, and repair of output that does not match the schema.

Features and best fit

Based on official documentation; not hands-on tested · Content checked:

Key features

Define supported intents as types and validate model output

Once an application defines its accepted intents as types, TypeChat constructs a prompt containing those types and checks whether the model response conforms to the schema. When validation fails, it can use the validation result to ask the model to repair the response.

Grow from small classifiers to hierarchical intent schemas

Schemas can represent a small sentiment classifier or richer domains such as orders, calendars, and music actions. Developers can extend discriminated unions or use a meta-schema that selects one or more sub-schemas from the input, allowing the interface to expand without replacing the core approach.

Best fit

Fits natural-language interfaces that must hand validated data to existing logic

TypeChat is useful when free-form chat input needs to become validated JSON or typed objects before existing application code acts on it. It also fits teams that want accepted operations to be reviewable as schemas instead of relying only on increasingly complex prompt instructions.

Before adoption

Schema conformance does not guarantee factual or operational safety

Validation constrains output shape, but it does not prove that values are true or that an action is authorized. Applications still need permission checks, domain validation, and user confirmation around consequential operations. The current TypeScript package requires Node.js 22.19.0 or newer, and model endpoints and credentials are configured separately.

Supplemental curator note

When comparing natural-language interface libraries, look beyond model accuracy to whether accepted operations can be represented in reviewable code. TypeChat puts types at that boundary, but authorization and business-rule validation remain application responsibilities.

Try it in 3 steps

  1. 1

Check out the reviewed source revision

Use the same commit reviewed for the instructions and dependency requirements.

git clone https://github.com/microsoft/TypeChat.git && cd TypeChat && git checkout 83caa1242d9a9a707a4a66bfbc5fe6174cbcb8dc
  2. 2

    Install the TypeScript workspace dependencies

Use Node.js 22.19.0 or newer. Building does not require a model API key.

    cd typescript && npm install
  3. 3

    Build the library and examples

Verify the full workspace before configuring credentials and calling an external model.

    npm run build-all
