Overview
WorkAdventure is a collaboration platform built around a 16-bit-style 2D world where users move avatars and start video conversations when they approach one another. Spaces can be used for virtual offices, recruiting, onboarding, training, and events.
Features and best fit
Based on official documentation; not hands-on tested · Content checked:
Key features
Combine movement through space with proximity conversations
Users navigate a map as avatars, and physical proximity in the virtual world can trigger video conversations, creating a more spontaneous interaction model than scheduled meeting rooms.

Design virtual spaces for different collaboration scenarios
Maps can be customized for offices, recruiting events, training, onboarding, and other immersive experiences accessed from desktop, mobile, or tablet browsers.

Compose chat, maps, and integrations from several services
The development Compose stack includes the web client, backend, map storage, Matrix, reverse proxy, and related services that support chat and embedded integrations.

Best fit
Fits teams that want a persistent online place rather than only scheduled calls
It is relevant for organizations and communities that want people to see who is around, move between spaces, and initiate informal conversations online.

Before adoption
Treat the README Docker Compose path as a development setup
The quick setup copies .env.template and starts docker-compose for development. Public deployments should separately plan authentication, TURN, secrets, persistence, and external URLs.
Major components use AGPLv3 plus a Commons Clause
Component LICENSE.txt files add a Commons Clause to AGPLv3 and state that the Enterprise edition can be licensed under separate commercial terms. GitHub therefore does not report a single SPDX license for the repository.

Real-time media depends on browser and network conditions
Video and audio require network planning such as STUN/TURN in NAT or firewall environments. Validate expected concurrency and connectivity in the intended deployment.

Supplemental curator note
WorkAdventure centers collaboration around walking through a 2D space and starting conversations as people approach one another. The source is public, but major components use AGPLv3 with a Commons Clause, so commercial-use terms should be reviewed rather than treating it as plain AGPL.
