Overview
Actix Web is an asynchronous web framework for Rust. It provides routing, middleware, HTTP/1.x and HTTP/2, WebSockets, streaming, compression, multipart handling, static files, and integration with the Tokio ecosystem.
Features and best fit
Based on official documentation; not hands-on tested · Content checked:
Key features
Build HTTP APIs with typed routing and extractors
Routes can be declared with macros or builders, while path, JSON, and other request data are extracted into Rust types and handled by async functions.

Handle HTTP/2, WebSockets, streaming, and compression in one stack
The framework supports HTTP/1.x, HTTP/2, WebSockets, streaming, multipart data, static assets, and Brotli/gzip/zstd compression.
Integrate with Tokio and middleware
Actix Web is compatible with Tokio and provides middleware patterns for logging, sessions, CORS, and other cross-cutting concerns.

Best fit
Fits Rust teams building APIs and real-time backends
It is relevant when REST-style APIs, WebSockets, or streaming services should use Rust's type system and a Tokio-based asynchronous runtime.

Before adoption
Version 4.15.0 requires Rust 1.88 or newer
The workspace and actix-web package set the minimum supported Rust version to 1.88, so older pinned toolchains must be upgraded first.

Experimental features may break between releases
The README explicitly says features prefixed experimental can receive breaking changes in any release. experimental-introspection should be treated as local diagnostic tooling rather than a stable production contract.

Supplemental curator note
Actix Web is a strong fit for low-overhead Rust APIs and real-time services. Version 4.15.0 requires Rust 1.88+, and features prefixed experimental may break in any release, so production use should avoid or tightly pin them.
Try it in 3 steps
- 1
Create a Rust project
Create a new binary project with Rust 1.88 or newer.
cargo new actix-demo && cd actix-demo - 2
Add Actix Web 4.15.0
Pin the published version and place the README Hello World example in src/main.rs.
cargo add actix-web@4.15.0 - 3
Run and verify the server
Open http://127.0.0.1:8080/hello/world and verify the route and response.
cargo run
