About these scores

OSS scale score is an unbounded metric that log-compresses and weights Stars, Watchers, Forks, and Contributors. Discovery score is the current OSS scale score minus the score at discovery. Update pace is commits in the last 30 days, growth momentum is the OSS scale score difference within the recent observation window, and OSS health is a 0–100 rating based on available recency, Community Health, and release data.

Overview

Boto3 is the official AWS SDK for Python. It provides low-level service clients and resource interfaces, credential and region resolution, and Botocore service models for calling AWS APIs such as S3 and EC2.

Features and best fit

Based on official documentation; not hands-on tested · Content checked:

Key features

Call AWS APIs through service clients

boto3.client() or Session-created clients expose AWS service operations as Python methods. Request signing, endpoint resolution, retry behavior, and service models are provided together with Botocore.

Separate credentials, profiles, and regions through Session configuration

The default session or explicit boto3.session.Session can resolve AWS credentials and regions from shared configuration, profiles, environment settings, and related sources. Services with resource interfaces also offer higher-level object-oriented APIs.

Best fit

Fits Python backends, batch jobs, and automation that operate AWS resources

It is the standard choice for Python applications and operational scripts that work with S3 objects, EC2, and other AWS services while relying on official service models and the AWS credential chain.

Before adoption

Boto3 1.43.108 requires Python 3.10+; pin the matching Botocore dependency range

Boto3 1.43.108 requires Python 3.10 or newer and depends on Botocore >=1.43.108,<1.44.0 plus s3transfer 0.19.x. AWS service models change frequently, so pin the SDK stack and validate IAM permissions, region, retries, and credential sources per deployment.

Supplemental curator note

Boto3 is the standard Python SDK for AWS. Avoid relying only on implicit default-session behavior in production: make roles, regions, timeouts, and retries explicit and pin Botocore with the rest of the SDK stack.

Try it in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Install Boto3 1.43.108

    Pin the SDK version from the reviewed repository tag. Python 3.10 or newer is required.

    python -m pip install "boto3==1.43.108"
  2. 2

    Create an explicit Session

    Verify the SDK version and an explicitly configured region locally without using credentials.

    python - <<'PY' import boto3 session = boto3.Session(region_name='us-east-1') print(session.region_name) print(boto3.__version__) PY
  3. 3

    Inspect available service models

    Check local service models for S3 and EC2 without making any AWS network request.

    python - <<'PY' import boto3 session = boto3.Session(region_name='us-east-1') services = session.get_available_services() print('s3' in services, 'ec2' in services, len(services)) PY
