Overview
Cocos Engine is the runtime framework used by the Cocos Creator editor. Low-level native platform adaptation, rendering, and scene management are implemented in C++, while user-facing APIs are exposed through TypeScript. It targets native, web, and mini-game platforms for 2D and 3D games.

Key features
Split runtime responsibilities between C++ and TypeScript
Native platform adaptation, rendering, and scene-management work is implemented in C++, while TypeScript APIs provide the game-facing programming layer.
Target Vulkan, Metal, WebGL, and other graphics backends
The GFX layer adapts to native and web graphics APIs and supports forward and deferred rendering, surface shaders, and physically based rendering.

Use integrated physics, animation, particles, UI, and scene systems
The runtime includes animation, physics, particles, terrain, UI, asset handling, and scene-node management in addition to rendering.

Best fit
Fits cross-platform 2D and 3D game development with Cocos Creator
It suits game teams that want one project across native, browser, and mini-game targets while retaining the option to customize the engine layer.

Before adoption
Treat it as the Cocos Creator runtime rather than a standalone library
The README explicitly says the engine is integrated with Cocos Creator and is not designed for independent use. Normal projects use it through the editor, with source checkout reserved for engine customization.

Keep engine customization aligned with the Creator release
When using the 3.8.8 source as a custom engine, keep it aligned with the corresponding Cocos Creator version rather than following a newer development branch implicitly.

Supplemental curator note
This repository is primarily the runtime used with Cocos Creator rather than a general-purpose standalone game framework. Before customizing engine source, separate requirements that truly need runtime changes from features the editor already provides to reduce upgrade cost.
Try it in 3 steps
- 1
Clone the Cocos Engine 3.8.8 release tag
Pin the release tag rather than a moving development branch so the engine can be aligned with the matching Cocos Creator release.
git clone --depth 1 --branch 3.8.8 https://github.com/cocos/cocos-engine.git && cd cocos-engine - 2
Install engine dependencies
Install development dependencies using Node 18 or newer as required by package.json.
npm install - 3
Build the engine outside the editor
Cocos Creator builds the engine automatically inside the editor; use the official build script when validating a standalone source checkout.
npm run build
