Overview
Coil is a Kotlin-first image-loading library for Android and Compose Multiplatform. It integrates memory and disk caching, downsampling, and automatic request pausing or cancellation, while Compose applications can render images through AsyncImage. Network fetching is selected through separate OkHttp or Ktor modules.
Features and best fit

Key features
Load images in Compose through AsyncImage
Adding coil-compose provides the AsyncImage composable for binding an image model directly into Compose UI while Coil manages request execution.

Use memory and disk caching with downsampling and lifecycle-aware requests
The README highlights memory and disk caching, downsampling, and automatic pausing or cancellation as core optimizations for image-heavy screens.

Choose a networking module such as OkHttp or Ktor
Coil 3 separates networking from the Compose artifact. The Quick Start pairs coil-compose with coil-network-okhttp, allowing applications to select a network stack.

Best fit
Fits shared image loading across Android and Compose Multiplatform
It suits Kotlin and Compose applications that want fetching, decoding, caching, and presentation to follow a common API across supported platforms.

Before adoption
Add a networking dependency explicitly for HTTP images
coil-compose alone does not provide an HTTP network implementation. Add an OkHttp or Ktor networking artifact according to the application's stack.

Android projects need minSdk 23 or newer
The 3.6.3 Gradle configuration sets Android minSdk 23 and compile/target SDK 37, so existing applications should verify their minimum OS policy.

Supplemental curator note
Coil fits Compose applications that want image loading to follow UI lifecycle with selectable networking integrations. Validate placeholders and caching together with request cancellation, image sizing, and network behavior on representative devices.
Try it in 3 steps
- 1
Add Coil 3.6.3 Compose and networking modules
Add the Compose artifact and the OkHttp networking artifact at the same pinned version.
implementation("io.coil-kt.coil3:coil-compose:3.6.3") implementation("io.coil-kt.coil3:coil-network-okhttp:3.6.3") - 2
Render an image with AsyncImage
Pass a URL as the model and let Coil handle fetching, decoding, caching, and request lifecycle integration.
AsyncImage(model = "https://example.com/image.jpg", contentDescription = null) - 3
Verify the Android build
Confirm that 3.6.3 builds with the application's minSdk, Compose, AGP, and R8 configuration.
./gradlew assembleDebug
