Overview
.NET Community Toolkit is a Microsoft-maintained, .NET Foundation collection of UI-framework-agnostic helper libraries. Packages such as CommunityToolkit.Mvvm, CommunityToolkit.Diagnostics, CommunityToolkit.HighPerformance, and CommunityToolkit.Common can be installed independently from NuGet for MVVM, validation, memory, and general utility scenarios.
Features and best fit
Based on official documentation; not hands-on tested · Content checked:
Key features
Use MVVM Toolkit for observables, commands, and messaging
CommunityToolkit.Mvvm provides ObservableObject, RelayCommand and AsyncRelayCommand, messengers, validation support, and bundled source generators to reduce MVVM boilerplate.
Use Diagnostics Guard and ThrowHelper for validation
CommunityToolkit.Diagnostics provides Guard APIs for argument and state checks plus ThrowHelper methods for efficient exception paths.
Best fit
Fits shared utilities and MVVM foundations across .NET UI stacks
It suits applications and libraries spanning WPF, WinUI, .NET MAUI, Uno, and other .NET environments that want reusable ViewModel and utility patterns.

Before adoption
Install only the NuGet packages that are actually needed
The repository contains multiple independent packages rather than one mandatory umbrella dependency. Keep the API and dependency surface small by selecting only MVVM, Diagnostics, HighPerformance, or other required components.

Check target-framework and source-generator compatibility
The 8.4.2 MVVM package targets netstandard2.0, netstandard2.1, net8.0, and a Windows net8.0 TFM, and bundles source-generator builds for multiple Roslyn versions.

Separate repository build SDK requirements from package consumption
The v8.4.2 repository global.json pins .NET SDK 10.0.101, while published packages target netstandard and net8.0. Do not treat the source repository's contributor SDK as the minimum runtime requirement for consumer applications.

Supplemental curator note
The toolkit is useful when WPF, WinUI, .NET MAUI, and other applications should share helpers without tying them to one UI stack. It ships as feature-specific NuGet packages, so select only MVVM, Diagnostics, HighPerformance, or other components that are actually needed.
Try it in 3 steps
- 1
Create a small .NET console project
Validate a package API in a small project before adding it to an existing application.
dotnet new console -n ToolkitDemo && cd ToolkitDemo - 2
Add Diagnostics 8.4.2
Pin only the package needed for argument validation rather than taking unrelated toolkit components.
dotnet add package CommunityToolkit.Diagnostics --version 8.4.2 - 3
Run the Guard API
Execute a null guard and confirm the package is referenced and running correctly.
printf 'using CommunityToolkit.Diagnostics;\nstring? value = "ok";\nGuard.IsNotNull(value);\nConsole.WriteLine(value);\n' > Program.cs && dotnet run
