Overview
sentry-ruby is Sentry's SDK for Ruby applications. It captures exceptions and events, supports performance tracing, breadcrumbs and context, logs and metrics, and connects Rails, Sidekiq, Resque, OpenTelemetry, and other integrations through companion gems.
Features and best fit
Based on official documentation; not hands-on tested · Content checked:
Key features
Capture exceptions with tags, context, and breadcrumbs
Applications initialize the SDK with Sentry.init and can enrich error events with tags, contexts, breadcrumbs, and other diagnostic data before sending them to Sentry.
Sources: [1]
Add performance monitoring through trace sampling
The SDK supports transaction sampling through traces_sample_rate or traces_sampler, combining error monitoring and performance traces in one integration.
Sources: [1]
Add Rails, Sidekiq, OpenTelemetry, and other integrations as companion gems
The repository provides sentry-rails, sentry-sidekiq, sentry-resque, sentry-opentelemetry, sentry-yabeda, and other adapters for framework, job, and telemetry stacks.

Best fit
Fits Ruby services centralizing error and performance telemetry
It is useful for Rack and Rails applications and background workers that want exceptions, traces, logs, and metrics collected into Sentry for post-release diagnosis.

Before adoption
Configure data collection and PII policy explicitly
The 7.x line moves toward granular data_collection controls for user information, cookies, HTTP headers and bodies, query parameters, database query data, and more. Review collected data against organizational policy before production rollout.

Rails structured-logging defaults changed again in 7.1.0
After logging and metrics defaults changed in 7.0.0, version 7.1.0 disables Rails Structured Logging by default. It also wraps user callbacks so exceptions inside callbacks are less likely to break the application, so upgrades should account for 7.0-to-7.1 behavior changes.

Supplemental curator note
A production DSN sends telemetry to Sentry or a self-hosted endpoint. Review data_collection controls for PII and HTTP/database data, and account for the Rails structured-logging default change in 7.1.0.
Try it in 3 steps
- 1
Create an isolated Bundler project for sentry-ruby 7.1.0
Pin only the core SDK first, without Rails or other integration gems.
mkdir -p sentry-ruby-demo && printf 'source "https://rubygems.org"\ngem "sentry-ruby", "7.1.0"\n' > sentry-ruby-demo/Gemfile - 2
Install the dependencies
Install sentry-ruby 7.1.0 and its core dependencies into the local project.
cd sentry-ruby-demo && bundle install - 3
Initialize the SDK without a DSN and print the version
With no DSN configured, this checks SDK loading and initialization without sending events to an external Sentry endpoint.
cd sentry-ruby-demo && bundle exec ruby -e 'require "sentry-ruby"; Sentry.init { |c| c.dsn = nil }; puts Sentry::VERSION'
