Collect, store, and search distributed traces to investigate latency and failure paths

About these scores

OSS scale score is an unbounded metric that log-compresses and weights Stars, Watchers, Forks, and Contributors. Discovery score is the current OSS scale score minus the score at discovery. Update pace is commits in the last 30 days, growth momentum is the OSS scale score difference within the recent observation window, and OSS health is a 0–100 rating based on available recency, Community Health, and release data.

Overview

Jaeger is a distributed tracing platform for investigating how requests move across services and where latency or failures occur. Its Collector accepts OTLP data from OpenTelemetry SDKs, writes traces to storage, and exposes them through the Query Service and web UI. The project is graduated within the Cloud Native Computing Foundation.

Features and best fit

Key features

Follow one trace across service boundaries

The Collector receives spans emitted by application OpenTelemetry SDKs and relates them into traces. Through the Query Service and web UI, operators can inspect timing, parent-child relationships, and error locations across multiple services.

Separate collection, querying, and storage for the deployment

Jaeger v2 uses OpenTelemetry Collector components and lets operators arrange the Collector, Query Service, UI, and storage for their environment. Storage plugins connect the persistence layer, and the README documents support policies for Elasticsearch, OpenSearch, Cassandra, and ClickHouse.

Best fit

Fits investigation of latency and dependencies in service architectures

Jaeger fits teams that need to identify slow segments or downstream failures when one request crosses multiple services. It is also a candidate when OpenTelemetry is the common instrumentation standard from development troubleshooting through production observability.

Before adoption

Separate all-in-one evaluation from production and track compatibility

The Docker all-in-one example combines the UI, Collector, Query, and in-memory storage for quick evaluation. Production deployments must separately design persistent storage, retention, ingestion capacity, redundancy, authentication, and network exposure.

Because Jaeger v2 uses OpenTelemetry Collector components, dependency changes can deprecate configuration options. The project promises at least three months or two minor releases before eligible removal, but upgrades still require checking release notes and configuration compatibility.

Supplemental curator note

Evaluate more than the trace UI: instrumentation standards, retention, query load, and storage-failure behavior all shape an operational deployment. The all-in-one image is for evaluation and should not be mistaken for a production availability design.

Try it in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Pull the reviewed image

Pull the Jaeger v2.21.0 container image reviewed for this guide.

    docker pull jaegertracing/jaeger:v2.21.0
  2. 2

    Start all-in-one

Start the UI, Collector, Query service, and in-memory storage in one container.

    docker run --rm --name jaeger -p 16686:16686 -p 4317:4317 -p 4318:4318 jaegertracing/jaeger:v2.21.0
  3. 3

    Open the web UI

Open the Jaeger UI in a browser. OTLP is available over gRPC on 4317 and HTTP on 4318.
