Overview
Rack is the common interface underneath the Ruby web ecosystem. It reduces HTTP requests and responses to a small contract that connects servers, frameworks, applications, and middleware, and it provides shared primitives such as Rack::Request, Rack::Response, and parameter and multipart parsing.

Key features
Connect web servers, frameworks, and applications through one request/response interface
Rack defines a minimal contract that passes an HTTP request environment into an application and returns a response made of status, headers, and body. This keeps higher-level frameworks such as Rails and Sinatra decoupled from server implementations.

Build HTTP processing in layers with middleware and Request/Response helpers
Logging, conditional GET, static-file handling, and other middleware can be stacked around an application, while Rack::Request, Rack::Response, query parsing, and multipart parsing provide reusable primitives for framework and middleware authors.

Best fit
Fits Ruby backends that need reusable middleware, gateways, and framework/server integration
Rack is useful for separating authentication, logging, header processing, and similar cross-cutting HTTP behavior from framework-specific code and reusing that behavior across Rack-compatible frameworks and servers.

Before adoption
Treat request-parser limits and Rack 3.2 security patches as operational requirements
The README exposes limits for parameter depth, multipart file counts, and total multipart parts. The 2026 3.2 changelog contains repeated security hardening for Rack::Directory, forwarded headers, multipart parsing, Rack::Static, and Rack::Sendfile, so deployments should stay current on patch releases and tune parser limits to proxy and upload requirements. Main's gemspec requires Ruby 2.7.3 or newer.

Supplemental curator note
Rack sits underneath much of the Ruby web stack, so applications can be affected through Rails, Sinatra, Puma, and other components even when they use few Rack APIs directly. The 2026 3.2 line includes substantial request-parsing and static/sendfile security work, making patch-level maintenance important.
