Overview
Rclone is a command-line program described as rsync for cloud storage. It configures providers such as S3, Google Drive, OneDrive, Dropbox, WebDAV, SFTP, and Cloudflare R2 as remotes, then provides common copy, sync, bisync, hash-check, mount, and serve commands.

Key features
Bring the main workload into one foundation
Define cloud providers and local filesystems as remotes, then copy changed files, perform one-way sync, run bidirectional bisync, or compare hashes through common commands.
Layer virtual backends such as Crypt, Chunker, Compress, and Union for client-side encryption, large-file splitting, compression, and combined remotes.

Best fit
Where it fits
It fits scripted backup, migration, and recurring synchronization across providers, plus cases that need to mount or serve cloud storage through local protocols.

Before adoption
Constraints to check before adoption
Building v1.75.1 from source uses Go 1.26.0 according to go.mod. sync can delete destination files, so begin with disposable data and --dry-run; also protect credentials and account for provider API limits. The reviewed-commit COPYING file is MIT.

Supplemental curator note
Its strength is isolating provider differences in remote configuration while keeping copy, sync, and check commands consistent. Start with local test directories and use dry-run before any destructive sync.
Try it in 3 steps
- 1
Install Rclone v1.75.1 with Go
Use Go 1.26.0 and place the reviewed release binary in a dedicated directory.
GOBIN="$PWD/rclone-bin" go install github.com/rclone/rclone@v1.75.1 - 2
Create local test data
Prepare source and destination directories without cloud credentials.
mkdir -p rclone-demo/source rclone-demo/dest && printf "hello rclone\n" > rclone-demo/source/hello.txt - 3
Copy and verify hashes
Exercise copy and hash-equality checks with local filesystem backends.
./rclone-bin/rclone copy rclone-demo/source rclone-demo/dest && ./rclone-bin/rclone check rclone-demo/source rclone-demo/dest
