About these scores

OSS scale score is an unbounded metric that log-compresses and weights Stars, Watchers, Forks, and Contributors. Discovery score is the current OSS scale score minus the score at discovery. Update pace is commits in the last 30 days, growth momentum is the OSS scale score difference within the recent observation window, and OSS health is a 0–100 rating based on available recency, Community Health, and release data.

Overview

SDWebImage is an asynchronous image downloading and caching library for Apple platforms. It adds URL-backed image loading APIs to UIImageView and related UI types, and extends the pipeline with memory/disk caches, progressive loading, animated images, transformations, and coder plugins.

Features and best fit

Based on official documentation; not hands-on tested · Content checked:

Key features

Combine asynchronous downloads and caching behind UIImageView APIs

A Swift call to imageView.sd_setImage can fetch a remote URL asynchronously while handling placeholders and caches. The core also avoids duplicate downloads for the same URL and manages memory and disk image caches.

Extend the pipeline with animated images, progressive loading, and coder plugins

The library supports GIF/APNG-style animated images, progressive loading, thumbnail decoding, transformations, and custom cache/loader systems. Additional coder plugins cover formats such as WebP, HEIF, AVIF, and SVG.

Best fit

Fits UIKit-heavy iOS applications that display many remote images

It is useful for lists and feeds that need shared download, cache, placeholder, and animation behavior. SwiftUI-specific views live in the separate SDWebImageSwiftUI repository.

Before adoption

Version 5.21.7 requires iOS 9+ and Xcode 15+, while SwiftUI UI lives in a separate package

The README lists iOS 9 or later and Xcode 15 or later. The SwiftPM target includes PrivacyInfo.xcprivacy. SwiftUI applications should separately evaluate SDWebImageSwiftUI when they need native SwiftUI image views rather than UIKit integration.

Supplemental curator note

SDWebImage fits UIKit-heavy applications that display many remote images and want shared download, cache, placeholder, and animation behavior. SwiftUI views live in SDWebImageSwiftUI, so SwiftUI-first apps should evaluate that package separately.

Try it in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Add SDWebImage 5.21.7 with SwiftPM

Pin the reviewed latest release. The README requires iOS 9+ and Xcode 15+.

    .package(url: "https://github.com/SDWebImage/SDWebImage.git", exact: "5.21.7")
  2. 2

    Import SDWebImage

Load the core module so UIKit can use the UIImageView web-cache extension.

    import SDWebImage
  3. 3

Load a remote image into UIImageView

Follow the README Swift example and verify asynchronous download, caching, and placeholder behavior together.

    imageView.sd_setImage( with: URL(string: "https://example.com/image.jpg"), placeholderImage: UIImage(named: "placeholder") )
