Overview
Serilog records .NET diagnostic information as structured events. It names values embedded in a message so the human-readable text and the data used for search or aggregation remain in the same log event.

Key features
Create searchable properties from message templates
A message template such as Log.Information("Processed {Count} items", 3) records both rendered text and a named Count value. Sinks route events to consoles, files, cloud services, databases, or message queues, while enrichers add shared context such as an application name or request identifier.

Best fit
Search and correlate work across distributed operations
It fits .NET applications that need consistent property names across web requests, background jobs, and calls to external APIs. Compared with interpolating every value into plain text, retaining RequestId, CustomerId, or elapsed time as properties makes incident filtering, aggregation, and correlation more reliable.

Before adoption
Include sinks, shutdown, and recorded values in the operating design
The core package produces no output until at least one sink is configured. Buffered sinks may require a flush before shutdown, and teams should test whether destination failures lose events or delay the application. Remove or redact secrets and personal data before passing values into templates. Version 4.4.0 targets .NET 6, 8, 9, 10 and .NET Standard 2.0 among others; GitHub reports Apache-2.0.

Supplemental curator note
Structured logging pays off only when the selected sink and storage preserve named properties. Test search, retention, and failure behavior in the real destination, and assess each sink package separately from the core.
Try it in 3 steps
- 1
Create a .NET 8 console project
With the .NET 8 SDK in a POSIX shell on macOS or Linux, or in Git Bash or WSL on Windows, create a disposable project and enter it. Continue in the same terminal and working directory.
dotnet new console -n serilog-demo --framework net8.0 && cd serilog-demo - 2
Add fixed core and console sink releases
Add the reviewed Serilog core and console sink versions from NuGet.
dotnet add package Serilog --version 4.4.0 && dotnet add package Serilog.Sinks.Console --version 6.1.1 - 3
Emit and verify a structured event
Write Program.cs with LF line endings, emit an event with a named Count property, and verify its rendered output. The command changes local files only.
printf '%s\n' 'using Serilog;' '' 'Log.Logger = new LoggerConfiguration().WriteTo.Console().CreateLogger();' 'Log.Information("Processed {Count} items", 3);' 'Log.CloseAndFlush();' > Program.cs && dotnet run | tee output.txt && grep -F 'Processed 3 items' output.txt
