Queue Ruby application work in Redis-compatible storage and process it with threads

About these scores

OSS scale score is an unbounded metric that log-compresses and weights Stars, Watchers, Forks, and Contributors. Discovery score is the current OSS scale score minus the score at discovery. Update pace is commits in the last 30 days, growth momentum is the OSS scale score difference within the recent observation window, and OSS health is a 0–100 rating based on available recency, Community Health, and release data.

Overview

Sidekiq is a background job system that moves time-consuming Ruby application work into a queue and executes it in a separate worker process. It uses multiple threads within each process and supports plain Ruby applications as well as Rails and Active Job. Jobs are stored in Redis, Valkey, or Dragonfly.

Features and best fit

Based on official documentation; not hands-on tested · Content checked:

Key features

Process queued jobs concurrently with multiple threads

A Sidekiq server process pulls jobs from Redis-compatible storage and runs them across multiple threads in the same process. This model can overlap I/O-heavy work and can expand across additional worker processes when more capacity is required.

Connect job creation and execution in Rails

The official setup adds the gem with Bundler and uses a Rails generator to create a class that includes Sidekiq::Job. Applications enqueue work with perform_async and process it by starting bundle exec sidekiq from the application root. Rails Active Job is also supported.

Best fit

Fits work that should leave the web request path

Sidekiq suits Ruby applications that move email delivery, external API calls, image processing, or other slow tasks out of a request. Teams that keep jobs small and make retries idempotent are better positioned to operate the queue reliably.

Before adoption

Verify runtime, storage, argument, and thread-safety requirements

The v8.1.7 README requires MRI Ruby 3.2+ or JRuby 9.4+ and targets Rails and Active Job 7.0+. Storage requires Redis 7.0+, Valkey 7.2+, or Dragonfly 1.27+. Job arguments must remain simple JSON-compatible types, and application code and dependencies must be thread-safe. The open-source edition uses LGPLv3, while Pro and Enterprise use a separate commercial license.

Supplemental curator note

Evaluate more than the concise job API: include availability of the Redis-compatible store and whether workloads are safe for multiple threads in one process. Idempotent retries and monitoring are central to estimating operational cost.

Try it in 3 steps

  1. 1

Add Sidekiq to a Rails application

Run this from an existing Rails application root that meets the Ruby, Rails, and storage requirements.

    bundle add sidekiq
  2. 2

    Generate a minimal job class

Implement perform in the generated class and keep arguments to simple JSON-compatible values.

    bin/rails generate sidekiq:job hard
  3. 3

    Start the worker process

Start Redis, Valkey, or Dragonfly first, then enqueue with HardJob.perform_async from a separate Rails console.

    bundle exec sidekiq
