Overview
Tippy.js is a JavaScript library for tooltips, popovers, dropdowns, and menus on the web. It uses Popper 2 for positioning and attaches floating content and interaction options to target elements.
Features and best fit
Based on official documentation; not hands-on tested · Content checked:
Key features
Attach tooltips and popovers to target elements
Import tippy, load the core tippy.js/dist/tippy.css stylesheet, and configure content and options for a selector or element to create floating UI.

Use Popper 2 positioning for placement and overflow behavior
Version 6 moved to Popper.js v2, with lower-level placement and overflow configuration passed through popperOptions and Popper modifiers.

Tune ARIA behavior for interactive and non-interactive popovers
The v6 aria option exposes content and expanded controls with defaults that adapt to interactive usage, supporting both explanatory tooltips and interactive popovers.

Best fit
Fits contextual help and small popovers around buttons, icons, and form controls
It is useful for adding hover-, focus-, or click-driven explanatory UI and menu-like popups without restructuring existing DOM.

Before adoption
HTML content is disabled by default and should be enabled only for trusted content
Version 6 defaults allowHTML to false for XSS safety. Applications that explicitly enable HTML content should avoid passing untrusted strings.

Supplemental curator note
Tippy.js remains a polished way to understand and maintain tooltip/popover integrations, but the repository is now archived. Version 6.3.7 can still be relevant for existing systems; new projects should compare actively maintained alternatives and future browser compatibility.
Try it in 3 steps
- 1
Install Tippy.js 6.3.7
Because the repository is archived, pin the final release when reproducing or maintaining an existing integration.
npm install --save-exact tippy.js@6.3.7 - 2
Import Tippy and the core CSS
Follow the README by loading the constructor and core stylesheet.
import tippy from 'tippy.js'; import 'tippy.js/dist/tippy.css'; - 3
Attach a tooltip to a target element
Configure tooltip content for the target element. For new projects, compare actively maintained alternatives because this repository is archived.
tippy('#help-button', { content: 'Helpful context', });
