Before adoption
Separate the stable line from the 1.0 beta
As of September 2026, 0.19.20 is the stable release while 1.0.0-beta.2 is also available. Review release-specific migration instructions and do not treat the beta line as the stable production track.
Federation depends on public URL, TLS, and proxy details
The official Docker guide expects a real domain, reverse proxy, and TLS, and warns not to alter headers such as Host that participate in ActivityPub signatures.

Download the Docker configuration
Fetch the Compose, Lemmy, and nginx configuration files used by the official Docker installation guide.

Configure the domain and secrets
Replace {{ domain }}, {{ postgres_password }}, and {{ nginx_internal_resolver }} with deployment-specific values. Public instances also need TLS and a reverse proxy.

Prepare image storage and start Lemmy
Set the pictrs directory ownership and start the stack. For federation, also verify that the reverse proxy preserves headers such as Host.
